Your Learning Path

From first lesson to finished shelf. Here's how it works.

1

Understand Your Wood

Start with British hardwoods. Learn what oak feels like versus ash. Understand grain direction and why it changes how you cut. This takes one or two sessions.

Master Basic Tools

You don't need everything. A saw, chisel set, plane, and mallet get you through your first year. We'll show you how to pick them, use them safely, and keep them sharp.

Build Something Real

Your first shelf teaches everything. Simple design. Solid joints. A finish that looks good. Takes about eight hours over two weekends. You'll use it for years.

What People Are Making

"I wasn't sure I'd be any good at this honestly. But after the first month my confidence got way better. I've built two shelves now and I'm working on a small cabinet. The instructors don't rush you — they actually explain the why behind every technique."

Common Questions

Do I need previous experience?

Not at all. We start with absolute basics. If you've never held a chisel, that's fine. Most people in our workshops are beginners.

How much do hand tools cost?

You can start with quality basics for £150-250. We'll show you which brands give real value. Many workshops have shared tools you can use while learning.

Where can I find a local Men's Shed?

Check the Men's Shed Association directory online. Most towns have one. They're welcoming spaces where you learn alongside others. Cost is usually minimal.

How long until I can make a real project?

Your first shelf? About four to six weeks of regular practice. Something more complex? Six months of steady learning. It depends on how often you practice.

What wood should I start with?

Oak and ash are forgiving for beginners. They're affordable, available locally, and teach you a lot about grain and technique. Save walnut for when you've got some hours in.
